How Storage Batteries Work?

When working with stationary batteries such as a lead storage battery, it is very important that one knows how to properly handle, install, and manage such components for safety. Lead storage batteries, or stationary batteries, are known as such because they are specifically intended to remain stationary in a set installation location instead of being moved around. In this blog, we will discuss some of the safety precautions and installation tips that one should know when working with such batteries, ensuring that they perform as intended without creating any hazards.

Generally, stationary battery installation and maintenance should only be conducted by trained and authorized personnel who are knowledgeable of how to handle such systems and parts, as well as are familiar with the hazards associated with them. One should never make any physical contact with insulated terminals or connectors, and any tool used to conduct work should be well insulated as well. As vented stationary batteries that are flooded lead-acid variations emit gasses that have the hazard of ignition, no open flames should be present in the surrounding environment. Additionally, wrap-around goggles are highly beneficial for protecting one’s eyes from hazardous materials and substances that may cause a burn. Other personal safety equipment that is necessary to prevent an injury or accident include rubber gloves, safety shoes, rubber aprons, a clean water supply for the eyes, and a mixture of water and sodium bicarbonate for spills.

Before beginning the installation process, ensure that you have the correct manufacturer instruction manual with you, and one should never deviate from the instructions provided in it for safety. If you do not have the instructions for any reason, you may be able to locate them online using the part or serial number of your battery. Additionally, having the stationary battery specifications that the manufacturer conforms to is quite beneficial, and there are various standards that one may consult. Alongside having the manual on-hand, one should always conduct a full inspection of the battery prior to installation to see if there are any concerning issues such as cracks, leaks, or other problems that would necessitate a repair or replacement.

To begin installation, the battery racks will be installed, and they should be firmly mounted onto floor brackets. If the rack has split-level tiers, ensure that there is ample headspace above the top row as batteries located there may tend to run hotter. Additionally, the area in and around the rack should always be kept clean. After installation, if there is ever a need for readjusting the battery and the rack, the battery should be removed before the rack is loosened or adjusted as it may cause a collapse. Always lift batteries from the bottom to keep yourself and battery safe, and the sticker that contains the serial number should be kept in a visible area. Each battery should be placed where the positive terminal of one can be connected to the negative terminal of the next, and cells should always be handled from the corner. Lastly, ensure that ample spacing is provided, all cables and connections are secure, and the correct polarity of each cell is established.
